My computer keyboard contains letters from three languages: English, Russian and Ukrainian. Although I don’t really speak Ukrainian, I like to produce my handout notes and Power Points in dual or triple language versions to be sure all my students understand.
In a way, these three languages exemplify our lives in Ukraine. The foundational Ukrainian culture has been overlaid with Russian culture from the Soviet era and Western culture since Ukrainian independence in 1991. Clothing styles, restaurant choices and language preferences change with every person we meet.
Evidently, switching languages and adapting to cultural changes keep the brain young and prevent Alzheimer’s disease. I think I’ll be safe if I don’t go crazy first. At least I won’t be facing what Artur (our 2013 graduate) is facing now that he is in China.
